With much of the country slowly reopening after months of stay at home orders, some probate courts in Tennessee will return with limited functionality, reports claim. For those Tennesseans heading to local courthouses, be prepared to undergo new normal protocols to combat COVID-19 outbreaks.
Social Distancing in Probate Court
Some counties in Tennessee can expect to see changes as a result of the novel coronavirus. As part of the new normal and efforts to reopen functions throughout the state, visitors to courthouses can expect to see the following:
- Temperature screenings
- Questions on travel, the health of family members, etc.
- Six feet markers to allow for distance when standing in lines and entering the facility
- Continuation of virtual hearings
- Limited capacity in courtrooms
While civil and domestic hearings will be placed on a priority-based schedule, probate courts will be permitted to do more than just the essential functions they have been. However, there are limitations on the number of people allowed in a room, so it is best that only the necessary parties are in attendance.
In addition, marriage licenses, which were issued only for those with wedding dates during the crisis, will be available on a limited basis. An appointment will be needed in order to obtain a license.
As well as the need for marriage licenses, the state has witnessed an increase in weapon carry licenses. Those renewal applications can be filled out online and sent in with your money order. However, you need the document signed in front of a notary. To get a new license, you’ll need to come to the courthouse in person, but because of the close contact required for fingerprints, individuals must wear masks for the safety of all.
